What is organic CTR?
Organic CTR is the percentage of searchers who saw your page in the unpaid results and clicked it. If your pricing page appeared 2,000 times in a month and got 60 clicks, its organic CTR was 3%. Paid ads have their own CTR, which is measured separately.
The "organic" part matters. It isolates how your listing performs on merit: your position, your title, your description and what else sits on the SERP around you. It's one of the measurement terms in our SEO and AEO glossary.
How do you calculate organic CTR?
Divide organic clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. An impression is counted when your result appears on a results page the searcher loaded, even if they never scrolled to it.
Query | Impressions | Clicks | Organic CTR |
|---|---|---|---|
Hypothetical: "website redesign cost" | 4,000 | 80 | 2% |
Hypothetical: "[brand] pricing" | 500 | 200 | 40% |
Hypothetical: "what is a brand sprint" | 3,000 | 30 | 1% |
The pattern in that illustrative table is typical. Branded queries earn high CTR because the searcher already wants you. Definition queries earn low CTR because the answer often appears right on the results page. In Google Search Console, open the Performance report and turn on the CTR column to see the real numbers for your own queries.
How do AI Overviews affect organic CTR?
AI Overviews lower organic CTR because they answer the question before the searcher reaches the links. Ahrefs found the top-ranking page's click-through rate is 58% lower when an AI Overview shows, compared with 34.5% lower in its 2025 study.
- Lower top-result CTR when an AI Overview shows (Ahrefs, Dec 2025 data)
- 58%
- The same drop in Ahrefs' 2025 study
- 34.5%
This doesn't make rankings worthless. Being cited in the AI Overview still puts your brand in front of the buyer, and the visitors who do click are usually further along. Our guide on how AI Overviews affect click-through rate covers the response in detail, and is SEO dead takes on the bigger question.
How do you improve organic CTR?
You improve organic CTR by making your listing the most specific, credible answer on the page. Small wording changes to titles and descriptions often matter more than people expect.
- Put the answer's shape in the title. "Website Redesign Cost: Ranges by Scope" beats "Our Thoughts on Redesigns".
- State something concrete. A real price, a number of steps or a year signals a specific page. A B2B example from our own site: a title that states "$8,000 for up to 6 pages" tells the searcher exactly what they'll find.
- Write the meta description as an answer. Google rewrites many descriptions, but a clear one is often kept.
- Earn rich results. Clear headings, FAQs and tables make your page eligible for features that take more space.
Hypothetical example: diagnosing a low CTR
For example, suppose a guide ranks third for "crm migration checklist" with a 0.8% CTR. You search the query and see an AI Overview, a People also ask box and two ads above you, so most searchers never scroll that far.
The fix isn't a new title alone. You restructure the page so its checklist is quotable, aiming to be cited inside the AI Overview, and you add a comparison table competitors don't have. The goal shifts from winning the click to being the source the answer is built from.
