What is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is a short, AI-generated answer that Google places at the top of a search results page, above the blue links. It summarizes what several pages say about the query and shows those pages as clickable sources, usually as cards or inline link icons.
It isn't a featured snippet. A snippet quotes one page word for word, while an AI Overview writes its own answer and blends several pages. It also isn't AI Mode, which is a separate conversational tab. For the full set of related terms, see our SEO and AEO glossary.
The name changed over time. Google tested the feature in Search Labs as the Search Generative Experience, or SGE, before rolling it out as AI Overviews.
What triggers an AI Overview?
An AI Overview is triggered when Google judges that a generated summary will help more than a list of links. In practice that means informational and comparison queries, especially longer ones with several parts, such as "how to choose a CMS for a SaaS marketing site".
- Likely to trigger: how-to questions, definitions, "X vs Y" comparisons, cost and "is it worth it" questions.
- Less likely: brand names, navigational searches ("stripe login"), local intent and fast-changing news.
- Varies by topic: health, finance and legal queries get more caution, and results change often.
Google doesn't publish a trigger list, so treat this as a pattern, not a rule. Our guide to getting cited in AI Overviews covers which page formats tend to show up.
How does Google choose the sources?
Google chooses AI Overview sources from pages it has already crawled and indexed, picking the ones that best support each part of the answer. Google's own AI features documentation says there are no extra requirements beyond normal SEO, and no special markup to opt in.
Ranking still helps, but citations no longer track the top ten closely. Conductor reports that 57% of AI Overview citations come from pages outside the top ten, which we unpack in do you need to rank top 10 to appear in AI Overviews. Off-site signals matter too: in Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks.

What does an AI Overview mean for a B2B site?
For a B2B site, an AI Overview means fewer clicks on general questions and more weight on the pages that get cited. The searcher reads the summary first, so the pages that win are the ones with a fact the summary can lift: a price, a definition, a clear verdict.
Example: how a pricing page becomes citable
Our own site is a real, simple case. Designify publishes fixed prices in plain sentences, such as a $6,000 landing page package and an $8,000 website for up to six pages. A sentence like that is easy for an AI system to extract and attribute, because it answers "how much does it cost" without hedging.
Compare that with a page that says "contact us for a quote". There's nothing to cite, so the summary pulls a range from someone else. We don't claim our pages are cited for any given query, only that this structure gives them a fair chance.
Our breakdown of how AI Overviews affect click-through rate shows what to change on the page those visitors land on.
How does an AI Overview relate to other search terms?
An AI Overview is one surface in a family of AI search features, and the terms overlap. This table separates them.
Term | What it is | Where it shows |
|---|---|---|
AI Overview | Generated summary with source links | Top of Google results |
AI Mode | Conversational Google search tab | Separate tab in Google |
Featured snippet | Verbatim quote from one page | Top of Google results |
A search that ends without a click | Any results page | |
Writing so answer engines quote you | Your own pages |
