What is an AEO strategy for B2B SaaS?
An AEO strategy for B2B SaaS is a plan to get your product named and cited when buyers ask AI assistants and Google's AI features about your category. It works backward from the questions buyers ask before a shortlist, and it focuses on the pages that convert, not on publishing volume.
The reason to plan it separately from SEO is focus, not new tactics. Google says its AI features reward the same fundamentals as normal search. What changes is which pages matter and how you measure them. Our answer engine optimization guide covers the concepts; this article is the operating plan, sized for a SaaS team with one marketer and no dedicated SEO.
If you're still deciding whether AEO is different from what you already do, read SEO vs AEO vs GEO first. The short version: same foundations, different scoreboard.
What does a 90-day AEO plan cover?
A 90-day AEO plan covers three blocks of work in order: prompts, pages and mentions. Each block produces something the next one needs, so skipping ahead usually means rewriting pages for prompts nobody asks.
Phase | Focus | Main output | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
Days 1–30 | Buyer prompts and baseline | Prompt list, citation audit, page-to-prompt map | Marketing lead with sales input |
Days 31–60 | Money pages | Rewritten homepage, pricing, 2–4 comparison and use-case pages | Writer and designer, developer for build |
Days 61–90 | Third-party mentions | Outreach list, one citable asset, review and partner placements | Marketing lead, founder for podcasts |
Ongoing | Measurement | Monthly prompt audit, GA4 AI channel, form attribution | Marketing lead |
Notice what isn't on the list: llms.txt files, AI-only schema and content chunking. Google's May 2026 guidance calls those unnecessary, and we cover why in AEO myths.
Days 1–30: how do you find the buyer prompts that matter?
You find the prompts that matter by collecting the questions real buyers ask before they talk to sales, then checking which ones already return an AI answer that names competitors. That gives you a short list of prompts where being named changes the shortlist.
Mine sales and support
Pull questions from call recordings, demo notes and lost-deal reasons. Buyers ask about price, integrations, security, migration effort and fit for their size.
Write them as prompts
Turn each into the way a buyer types it into ChatGPT: "best invoicing tool for agencies under 50 people" rather than "invoicing software".
Run a baseline audit
Run every prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. Log whether you're named, which competitors appear and which URLs get cited.
Map prompts to pages
Assign each prompt to one existing or planned page. A prompt without a page is a gap; a page without a prompt is a candidate to merge.
Semrush's AI Visibility Index found ChatGPT cites about 15 sources per answer against about 3 for Gemini, so expect your audit to look very different engine by engine. Log them separately.
Days 31–60: which money pages should you fix first?
Fix the homepage first, then pricing, then comparison and use-case pages, because those are where AI-referred buyers land and convert. New blog posts come after, and only where the prompt map shows a gap.
TripleDart's Q1 2026 study of 28 B2B SaaS companies found homepages earned 31.9% of LLM citations and 81.7% of AI-attributed leads. General blog posts drew about 12,000 sessions and no leads. That's the evidence for a money-pages-first plan, and it matches what we see when we rewrite sites: the homepage is usually the vaguest page and the one engines lean on most.
- Homepage: say what the product is, who it's for and who it isn't for in the first screen. Use the words buyers use in prompts.
- Pricing: publish plans or a starting range. A missing price sends the buyer back to the chatbot to ask someone else.
- Comparisons: honest tables against the alternatives buyers name, with a clear verdict on who should pick which.
- Use cases: one page per segment that shows up in the prompt list, with specifics and proof.
A messaging framework agreed before the rewrite keeps these pages consistent, which matters because engines compare what you say across pages and across the web.
Days 61–90: how do you earn third-party mentions?
You earn third-party mentions by giving other sites a reason to name you: original data, a useful template or tool, a strong point of view, or a product they review. Mentions matter more than links for AI visibility, so count them as the goal in their own right.
In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, web mentions correlated 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, branded search 0.392, Domain Rating 0.326 and backlinks only 0.218. Correlation isn't proof, but it explains why brands with modest link profiles still get cited.
- Review sites and marketplaces in your category, with complete, current listings.
- Partner and integration pages where your product is described in their words.
- Podcasts and community threads where your founder answers real questions.
- One citable asset per quarter, such as a benchmark, a calculator or a template.
How do you run an AEO framework with a small team?
A small team runs the AEO framework with one owner, one writer-designer pair and a developer for a few weeks in month two. The plan fails when nobody owns it, not when the team is small.
Pros
- In-house ownership keeps product knowledge close to the copy.
- The prompt audit and outreach need context only your team has.
- Small teams can ship page changes faster than large ones.
Cons
- Rewriting money pages needs copy, design and build skills at once.
- Page work stalls when it competes with launches and campaigns.
- Few small teams have time for monthly audits on top of the rewrite.
The usual split we see work: the marketing lead owns prompts, mentions and measurement, and an outside team handles the page rewrites and build in month two, then stays on for the monthly iteration if the work keeps coming.
How do you measure an AI search strategy for B2B?
Measure an AI search strategy for B2B with three numbers reviewed each quarter: the share of your buyer prompts where you're named, conversions on the pages engines cite, and the share of new pipeline that self-reports AI as a source. Traffic is a secondary signal.
Set up a GA4 channel group that catches chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini and copilot referrals, add a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field, and keep running the prompt audit monthly. Our guide to B2B attribution when buyers research in ChatGPT goes deeper on the gaps each method leaves.
For example, suppose the audit shows no movement after 90 days
Hypothetical example: a SaaS team rewrites its homepage and pricing page, ships two comparison pages, and after 90 days the prompt audit shows the same citation share.
Check three things before changing course. First, are the new pages in the HTML that crawlers see, or rendered only in JavaScript? Second, do third-party sites still describe the product with old positioning? Third, are the prompts still the right ones, or has the category language moved? In most cases the gap is mentions, which take longer than page changes.
