The AEO-Ready Website Checklist: 30 Things to Fix Before You Write More Content

A 30-point AEO checklist ordered by evidence strength: what Google says your site needs, what helps ChatGPT and Perplexity, and what's optional hygiene.

The short answer

An AEO checklist covers what a website needs before AI search can cite it: crawlable, server-rendered pages Google can index and quote; answer-first content with real tables, steps and FAQs; visible trust signals like named authors and dates; access for ChatGPT's and Perplexity's crawlers; and off-site mentions. Schema and llms.txt come last, as optional hygiene.

Key takeaways

  • Fix access first: a page AI crawlers can't fetch or read can't be cited, however well written.
  • Google says its AI features need only normal SEO, so its basics are the top of the list.
  • ChatGPT and Perplexity use their own crawlers. Allow them separately and check your CDN.
  • Answer-first structure, real tables and visible FAQs make passages easy to quote.
  • Schema and llms.txt are hygiene with no measured citation lift. Do them last.

Part of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): The Complete Guide for SaaS and B2B Sites

A website is ready for AI search when engines can fetch it, read its content without running scripts, find a clear answer on each important page and trust the source. Everything else is refinement. This checklist puts 30 fixes in order of evidence strength, so the items Google and field studies agree on come first and the speculative ones come last.

It's a site-build checklist, not a content plan: fix these before you write more. For the strategy around it, see our answer engine optimization guide. Items 1 to 21 follow Google's documented SEO basics and quality guidance, which Google says is all its AI features need. Items 22 to 26 are specific to ChatGPT, Perplexity and other engines. Items 27 to 30 are hygiene and measurement.

AEO checklist part 1: can engines access and index your pages?

Access is the strongest-evidence part of the list, because it's binary: if a page can't be crawled, indexed and shown as a snippet, it can't be used in an AI answer. Google states that pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

  • 1. Key pages are indexable. No noindex tags on money pages, and every one is in your XML sitemap.
  • 2. Main content is server-rendered. The text, tables and FAQs are in the HTML the server returns, not added by JavaScript later.
  • 3. robots.txt allows Googlebot and doesn't block the CSS and scripts pages need to render.
  • 4. Snippets aren't restricted. No nosnippet or tight max-snippet rules on pages you want quoted.
  • 5. Canonical tags point to the right URL, so engines don't split signals across duplicates.
  • 6. Every money page is linked internally with normal crawlable links, not only from a script-driven menu.
  • 7. Pages work well on mobile and load fast enough that crawlers and people don't give up.

Part 2: is your content easy to extract and quote?

Extraction is about making each passage useful on its own. Google's guidance asks for helpful, people-first content; field studies add that early, clear answers are cited most. Reported analyses of ChatGPT citations put about 44% of them in the first 30% of a page.

  • 8. Each page answers one clear question in its first 40 to 60 words, in a sentence that names the subject.
  • 9. H2s are phrased as real questions, and each section opens with a one- or two-sentence answer.
  • 10. Comparisons use real HTML tables, never images or div grids.
  • 11. Processes use numbered steps with one action each.
  • 12. Each key page has a visible FAQ of real buyer questions; see FAQ sections that get cited.
  • 13. No important text is baked into images, and images that carry meaning have alt text.
  • 14. Pricing is stated in text, even if it's a range or a starting price.
  • 15. Comparison pages end with an honest verdict, including who each option isn't for.

Part 3: does your site show why it should be trusted?

Trust signals help engines choose between similar passages. They're well supported by Google's quality guidance and by 2026 freshness data: AirOps reports over 70% of cited pages were updated within 12 months.

  • 16. Expert content has named authors linked to author pages with real credentials; see author pages for SEO.
  • 17. Published and updated dates are visible near the title and match the dates in markup.
  • 18. Every statistic names its source in the sentence.
  • 19. The About page states company facts: what you do, founders, location, founding year.
  • 20. Your company description is identical on your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and directories.
  • 21. Money pages are reviewed quarterly, and dates change only when the content does.

Part 4: what helps ChatGPT, Perplexity and other engines?

Other engines use their own crawlers, indexes and trust signals, so Google-readiness isn't enough. The evidence here is a mix of documented crawler behavior and correlation studies, such as Ahrefs' finding that web mentions correlated 0.664 with AI Overview visibility, against 0.218 for backlinks.

  • 22. robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search and Perplexity. Decide separately about training crawlers.
  • 23. CDN and firewall bot protection doesn't block them. Test, because defaults vary.
  • 24. The site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools with a sitemap submitted, since some AI tools draw on Bing's index.
  • 25. You have one mention-earning asset per core topic, such as original data, a free tool or a template.
  • 26. Your company is listed accurately on review sites, directories and comparison roundups your buyers read.

Why these engines behave differently is covered in how AI search engines choose sources.

Part 5: what is optional hygiene, and how do you measure?

The last four items have weak or no evidence of lifting citations but are cheap and useful for other reasons. Ahrefs' controlled 2026 test found no AI citation lift from schema, and found 97% of llms.txt files got zero requests.

  • 27. Schema basics are in place: Organization with sameAs on the homepage, Article with a named author on posts, BreadcrumbList site-wide.
  • 28. FAQPage markup matches visible FAQs, for clean parsing rather than a citation boost.
  • 29. llms.txt is optional. Add it if it's trivial on your stack; don't expect results.
  • 30. Measurement is set up: a GA4 AI channel group, a "How did you hear about us?" form field and a monthly audit of 20 to 30 buyer prompts.

If someone sells you items 27 to 29 as the core of an AEO project, ask for evidence. Our list of AEO myths covers the most common oversold tactics.

How should you work through the AEO checklist?

Work through it in order, page type by page type, starting with the pages that bring leads. In TripleDart's Q1 2026 study of 28 B2B SaaS companies, homepages drew 81.7% of AI-attributed leads, so the homepage is the first page to check against every item.

  1. Audit access site-wide

Run items 1 to 7 and 22 to 23 across the whole site in one pass. These are usually template-level fixes.

  2. Fix the homepage and money pages

Apply items 8 to 21 to the homepage, pricing, product, comparison and use-case pages first.

  3. Then the blog's best pages

Apply the content items to the posts that already get impressions in Search Console.

  4. Start off-site work

Begin items 25 and 26 in parallel; mentions take months to build.

  5. Add hygiene and measurement

Finish with items 27 to 30, then rerun the prompt audit monthly.

Rebuilding or migrating? Do the checklist during the build

A redesign or platform move is the cheapest moment to fix access and structure, because templates are being rebuilt anyway. Write the requirements into the build: server-rendered content, a table component that outputs real HTML, an FAQ block, author and date fields in the CMS, and schema generated from the same content.

Keep every old URL working with redirects so existing citations still resolve. Our website migration SEO checklist covers that side, and building an AI-search-ready website covers the build itself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to complete an AEO checklist?
It depends on the site. Access fixes like robots.txt rules and CDN settings can take an afternoon. Rendering problems on a client-side app can mean rebuilding templates. Content items scale with the number of money pages. A small B2B site can often get through the access and content sections in a few focused weeks; off-site mentions are ongoing.
Do I need a developer to complete this checklist?
For some items, yes. Server rendering, CDN rules, table components and schema usually need someone who can change templates or code. Content items, author pages, dates, FAQs and off-site work can be done by marketers in most CMSs. On Webflow or Framer, more is possible without code, but rendering and markup still need checking.
What is the single most important item on the list?
Making sure crawlers can read your content. If key pages are client-rendered, blocked by robots.txt or stopped by bot protection, nothing else on the list can help, because the engine never sees the page. Check by viewing the raw page source and testing with the crawlers' user agents before working on anything else.
Should I block AI training crawlers?
That's a business decision separate from AEO. Blocking training crawlers, such as GPTBot, can stop your content being used to train future models, while still allowing search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot that power cited answers. If visibility in AI answers matters to you, never block the search crawlers, and review your rules whenever engines announce new bots.
